Den sorte saxofonist Andrew Loves betydning for populærmusikken understreges af den begrundelse, der blev givet, da han og kollegaen, den hvide trompetisk Wayne Jackson, blev indlemmet i “Musicians Hall of Fame”. Der kunne man læse, at The Memphis Horns spillede på stort set alle indspilningerne fra den legendariske plademærke Stax Records. En bedrift, der sikrer en en varig plads i historiebøgerne.
Love, der døde forleden af Alzheimer, startede sin karriere som sessionmusiker i på plademærket Hi Records, På samme tid var Wayne Jackson ansat som studiemusiker på Stax, og de to mødtes efter arbejde for at spille sammen på de lokale natklubber. Og kammeratskabet mellem de to førte til at Love flyttede over til Stax, hvor de to kome til at spille for kunstnere som Sam & dave, Otis Redding og Isaac Hayes.
Efterhånden som samarbejdet udviklede sig, steg efterspørgslen efter dem – også fra andre plademærker – og de begyndte at markedsføre sig som “The Memphis Horns”. Og da Stax insisterede på, at de kun skulle arbejde for dem, tog de springet om blev freelance-studiemusikere. Det viste sig at være en klog beslutning, selv om det var risikabelt dengang. Som “The Memphis Horns” har Love og Jackson haft rigeligt at bestille siden dengang og figurerer på et hav af plader med kendte navne, fx Al Green, Aretha Frankling (fx på “Think”), Dusty Spingfield (“Son of a Preacher Man”), The Doobie Brothers, U2 (Rattle and Hum), Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Stephen Stills, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Jack White, Alicia Keys og så videre. Et unikt samarbejde, en formidabel evne til at spille næsten, hvad som helst, og en umiskendelig tone gjorde de to herrer i The Memphis Horns til den måske meste efterspurgte blæsersektion overhovedet i populærmusikken.
